We read, “Shades of People” by Shelley Rotner and used multicultural paint to match the shade of our skin. We then used Crayola’s multicultural paint to paint a self-portrait and make a handprint wreath to hang in our classroom.

We hung our handprint poster above our culturally responsive alphabet. This is something I learned from Dr. Mikakka Overstreet at the University of Northern Iowa’s Literacy Iniative. I enjoyed creating a culturally responsive alphabet and one of my teammates is using it as well. When my students are waiting in line to wash their hands, they often look at this alphabet!
