Preschool students enjoyed reading “Julian is a mermaid“ by Jessica Love. A young boy wants to dress up as a mermaid. My students were so worried he was going to get in trouble when he was dressing up as a mermaid. They loved it when his grandma wasn’t upset and instead shared her pearls with him.
We followed this reading with, “Pink is for Boys”. As I listed concrete examples of what boys can like, upon hearing “Boys can like Barbie Dolls” I saw a student laugh and shake her head. I then shared how their teacher LOVED to play with army tanks, dig for worms, catch frogs and snakes, and build with blocks when she was little. I shared that I even wanted to be called a boy’s name when I was in second grade. Later that day, I saw a male preschool teacher in the hallway and asked him if boys could like pink. “Oh, yes they can!” He answered and shared that every Wednesday he wears pink.
Following the reading of these books, students painted masks. These took longer to dry than anticipated, so we will finish next week and I’ll post a photo then!
