A few weeks ago, one of my students took a flashlight into the bathroom. Another version of myself might have simply been irritated by this, but I try and follow Ted Lasso’s wisdom, “Be curious, not judgmental” in all I do.

So I thought about it. What a brilliant idea my student had! The bathroom is completely dark. It is quite large with a lot of empty space. It is the perfect place to explore light, darkness, and shadows. So I got to work!

First, I used black light electrical tape to create an alphabet.
Here is the alphabet under a black light flashlight

Then, I added a cart with black light flashlights, regular flashlights, and some DIY light tables.

Just turn on the touch light in a tote and you’ve got a mini light table!

Then, I added a number wall with numerals and quantities.

I can’t wait to introduce this center to students on Monday! It will be a fun surprise for everyone, especially my friend who inspired the idea.

My toddler enjoyed helping with this project. 💜
